Our Immigration Courts: An Overview

Katherine S. Speer, J.D., Colorado Chapter of the American Immigration Law Association and Spanish Speaking Lawyers Committee.

This program provides an introduction to and overview of how our immigration courts work and relate to our broader judicial system; the immigration laws and regulatory structure; and important issues like removal (deportation), asylum, and applications for immigration benefits. To illustrate some of these concepts, the presentation follows a hypothetical case where a person who is not a U.S. citizen is stopped for speeding while under the influence and without a valid driver’s license. We follow the case from the arrest through the immigration proceedings and appeals.
